The golden barrel cactus is an ornamental plant loved by the public; a small, exquisite potted plant can easily add a different charm to your office or balcony. So, in daily life, how is the golden barrel cactus best cared for?

1. Soil

The golden barrel cactus likes fertile, well-draining calcareous sandy loam. It can be mixed using a measured amount of coarse sand, loam, leaf mold and a small amount of aged wall ash, and repotted with fresh soil and old roots trimmed once a year.

2. Light

The golden barrel cactus likes a sunny, well-lit environment and should not be placed in a dark indoor spot for long periods. It is best placed on a balcony to receive ample light, but it should not be placed in strong sunlight, so as to avoid damaging the stem of the ball; a little shading is needed. In summer, it can be placed in the sun for care before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m.

3. Temperature

The golden barrel cactus is not cold-tolerant; if the temperature is too low, yellow spots will appear on the ball. Therefore, the winter temperature should be kept at 8 to 10 degrees. When the temperature drops to around 5°C, it can be moved indoors to a sunny spot, then keep the soil dry and just guard against cold winds.

4. Watering

The golden barrel cactus is a drought-tolerant plant, but too much drought will cause slow growth. Therefore, during summer droughts it needs frequent watering, preferably in the early morning or evening, and never water with very cold water at noon. Each watering must wait until the potting soil is completely dry, and when watering, be careful not to splash the ball itself.

5. Fertilizing

In spring and autumn, about every 15 days, appropriately add cake fertilizer, bone meal or decomposed diluted liquid, and remember to keep it light rather than concentrated. During the growing period, apply a diluted fertilizer solution containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other components once or twice about every half month, together with watering. If using quick-acting chemical fertilizers such as urea or monopotassium phosphate, be careful not to let the fertilizer stick to the ball. After fertilizing, spray once with clean water to prevent the fertilizer from damaging the ball.

6. Pest and disease control

Although the golden barrel cactus has fairly strong disease resistance, hot, humid and poorly ventilated summer conditions may bring harm from red spider mites, scale insects, whiteflies and other pests and diseases. Red spider mites can be controlled by spraying with a 1000-1500 times dilution of 40% dimethoate or 90% trichlorfon. If scale insects or whiteflies are found, they can be wiped off directly.

Although the golden barrel cactus is an ornamental plant, it is not complicated to grow at all; with just a little simple care it can be very beautiful. Once mature, the golden barrel cactus will bloom, and its ornamental value is very high. It can also protect against radiation, and in feng shui it can ward off evil, making it a very good plant for home greening.
