How to Grow and Care for a Potted Kumquat
For potted kumquats, use a growing mix made by combining 4 parts leaf mold, 5 parts sandy soil, and 1 part cake fertilizer. The pot should be placed in a spot with plenty of sunlight. When the temperature drops below 10 degrees in late autumn, move it indoors promptly, and in winter the indoor temperature is best kept at 6-12 degrees. Before the spring buds sprout, prune off some of the previous year's branches, leaving 2-3 buds on the vigorous ones, and keep 3 pruned one-year-old branches per plant.
1. Soil and Light
Kumquats are suited to fertile, loose, acidic sandy loam. For potting, use a growing mix made by combining 4 parts leaf mold, 5 parts sandy soil, and 1 part cake fertilizer. During care, place it in a spot with plenty of sunlight; it can be kept outdoors in both winter and summer.
2. Temperature and Humidity
When the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius in late autumn, move it indoors promptly. In winter, the indoor temperature is best kept at 6-12 degrees. If the temperature is too low, it is prone to frost damage; if too high, it will affect the plant's dormancy and is not good for flowering and fruiting the following year. Spring is dry and windy, so spray water on the leaves once a day to increase air humidity. In summer, spray water 2-3 times a day and also spray the ground, but avoid spraying during the flowering period to prevent the flowers from rotting and affecting fruiting.
3. Fertilizing and Pruning
Potted kumquats require proper water and fertilizer management. When the branches have grown in fully, apply a quick-acting phosphorus fertilizer, such as superphosphate, to prevent excessive growth of branches and leaves and to promote flower bud differentiation and flowering and fruiting. Before the spring buds sprout, prune off some of the previous year's branches, leaving 2-3 buds on the vigorous ones, and keep 3 pruned one-year-old branches per plant, which helps the spring shoots sprout. When the new shoots grow to 15-20 cm, pinch off the tips to make the branches full.
