When Do Goji Berries Ripen? An Introduction to the Goji Berry Ripening Season
When Do Goji Berries Ripen
By ripening period, goji berries are divided into: spring-fruit goji, summer-fruit goji and autumn-fruit goji. Fruit ripening from June to early July, that is, the fruit on old-eye branches, is spring-fruit goji; fruit from early July to August that comes from that year's spring branches is called summer fruit; fruit ripening from September to October is autumn fruit.
Differences Between Goji Berry Varieties
Ningxia goji: Its quality leads the rest of the country and it has become the representative goji berry; Ningxia is known as the hometown of goji berries.
Zhongning goji: It is the finest among Ningxia goji berries, with thin skin and thick flesh, a pure taste, sweet, with no bitter or other off-flavors.
Yellow-fruit goji: Yellow when nearly ripe, orange-red or orange-yellow when ripe. The ripe yellow-fruit goji has a pointed, flat or slightly concave tip, a ridged body, a large tip and a slightly smaller base, thick flesh and a sweet taste.
Red-branch goji: Produced in Nuomuhong, Qinghai. It differs from Ningxia goji in that its old branches are brownish-red and its corolla lobes have no marginal hairs.
Truncate-calyx goji: Produced in Shanxi, northern Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Gansu, at elevations of 800-1500 m on hillsides, roadsides or field edges. Its berries are oblong or ovate-oblong, 5-8 mm long, with a small pointed tip at the apex. The seeds are orange-yellow, about 2 mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is May to October.
