How to Grow Okra: A Detailed Guide to Planting Methods and Techniques
Choose a sunny plot; the soil should preferably be loam or sandy loam with deep, loose, fertile soil and good drainage; generally sow when the soil temperature is above 15°C, using direct seeding of seeds, soaking the seeds and sprouting them first, then dibbling, with 3 seeds per hole, and covering with 2 cm of soil after sowing. Seedlings emerge in about 4-5 days, and are transplanted when they have 2-3 true leaves. After transplanting, do a good job of watering and fertilizing.
1. Soil: Okra requires long hours of sunlight and sufficient light, so a sunny plot should be chosen; okra is not particular about soil fertility, but loam or sandy loam with deep, loose, fertile soil and good drainage is preferable.
2. Sowing: Generally sow when the soil temperature is above 15°C. In southern China, sow after February; in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sow in early April; in coastal areas, sow in late April; in northern China, sow in early to mid-May. Use direct seeding of seeds, soaking the seeds and sprouting them first, then dibbling: water first, then sow, with 3 seeds per hole, and cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing. Seedlings emerge in about 4-5 days, and are transplanted when they have 2-3 true leaves.
3. Watering: Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. If there is a water shortage within 20 days after sowing, manual sprinkler irrigation in the morning and evening is advisable; after the seedlings are somewhat larger, mechanical sprinkler irrigation or furrow irrigation can be used. In the hot summer season, water before 9 a.m. and after sunset in the afternoon; pay attention to drainage during the rainy season.
4. Fertilizing: On the basis of applying sufficient base fertilizer, appropriate topdressing should be done. The first is the full-stand fertilizer, applied after the seedlings emerge; the second is the seedling-promoting fertilizer, applied after hilling following thinning or transplanting; during the flowering and fruiting stage, apply a heavy fertilizer once; in the middle and late growth stages, multiple small topdressings can be applied as appropriate.
