When Do Peonies Bloom? A Detailed Guide to the Blooming Season
Peonies generally bloom in April-May. Central Plains peonies usually bloom in the 4th-5th lunar month, or the 5th-6th solar month, while Gansu peonies are delayed by 1 month, generally blooming in the 5th-6th lunar month.
China's peony resources are especially rich. According to a survey by the special team of the Office for China's Peony Campaign to Be Named National Flower, peonies are cultivated in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Xizang, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Hainan, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, China and other places. They broadly fall into several types: wild species, semi-wild species and horticultural cultivars.
The largest and most concentrated peony cultivation areas include Heze, Luoyang, Pengzhou, Beijing, Linxia, Tongling County and others. Through Central Plains flower growers traveling to Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shenzhen and Hainan in winter to force peony blooms, peonies have been encouraged to settle in the above regions, spreading peony cultivation across all of China's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
