Peonies usually bloom in April-May. Central Plains peonies generally bloom in the 4th-5th lunar month, or May-June on the Gregorian calendar, while Gansu peonies are delayed by 1 month and generally bloom in the 5th-6th lunar month.

China's peony resources are especially rich. According to a survey by the special team of the Office for China's Peony Bid for National Flower, peonies are cultivated in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Xizang, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Qinghai, Hainan, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, China, and other places. They broadly fall into several types: wild species, semi-wild species and horticultural cultivars.

The largest and most concentrated peony cultivation areas include Heze, Luoyang, Pengzhou, Beijing, Linxia and Tongling County. Through Central Plains flower growers traveling to Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shenzhen and Hainan in winter to force peony blooms, peonies were encouraged to settle in these regions, spreading peony cultivation across all of China's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
