Points to note when planting vegetables in August

1. Pay attention to field cleanliness, remove the plant residues left after harvesting the previous crop, and eliminate the sources of summer pests. For vegetables planted in rows, use raised-bed cultivation; for densely planted vegetables, use deep-furrow narrow-bed cultivation to facilitate drainage and irrigation;

2. With strong sunlight and hot weather, irrigate in the evening, irrigate frequently with small amounts of water, and drain as soon as you irrigate;

3. Spray pesticides after 3 p.m., make sure fertilizer is fully decomposed to prevent root burn, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution as a foliar top dressing, and use chemical weed control before sowing and before planting.

4. After heavy rain, scatter fine soil to cover the roots. Seize the key periods to control pests: for the bean pod borer, act at the cowpea flowering stage; for the melon pod borer, act before the larvae spin leaves and roll them; for the tobacco cutworm, act during the peak hatching period of eggs and the stage when larvae cluster together. Spray pesticides in time and eliminate the pests while they are still young.

5. Pay attention to controlling rust disease and viral disease of bean vegetables, cowpea black mold, downy mildew and soft rot of cruciferous vegetables, bok choy spot blotch, Malabar spinach purple spot, water spinach white rust, as well as diamondback moth, beet armyworm, tobacco cutworm, bean pod borer, striped flea beetle, red spider mite, American leafminer, etc.
