When to Sow Hyacinth Beans? A Detailed Guide to the Best Sowing Time

Hyacinth beans are suitable for sowing in April-June. The optimum germination temperature for hyacinth bean seeds is 22-23 degrees Celsius, and the plants can tolerate high temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius. Their root system is well developed and strong, with strong drought tolerance and wide adaptability to soil, but planting in well-drained, fertile sandy soil or loam can significantly increase yield.

The three commonly used methods for sprouting hyacinth beans are as follows.

1. Sand sprouting

Use river sand that has been washed clean, scalded with boiling water and then air-dried until semi-dry, and mix it evenly with the seeds that have already been soaked (the ratio of river sand to seeds is 1—1.5 to 1), then place it in a clean clay pot (be careful that there is no oil), and maintain a suitable temperature. The features of this method are that it keeps warmth and moisture, produces uniform sprouting, has good air permeability, and will not cause the sprouts to rot.

2. Clay pot sprouting

Air-dry the soaked seeds until semi-dry, place them in a clean clay pot, cover with clean cotton cloth or gauze, etc., to keep warmth and moisture, and place on a heated kang for sprouting. Turn them once every 2—3 hours so that the seeds are heated evenly. At the same time, rinse the seeds 1-2 times a day to maintain a certain humidity.

3. Hanging bag sprouting

Air-dry the soaked seeds until semi-dry, put them into a clean gauze bag, and hang it in a suitable-temperature place in a greenhouse. Every 2—3 hours, touch the bag up and down with your hands and turn it gently, so that the moisture and heat are even and oxygen can be replenished. Note that the bag must not be filled full.
