How to Propagate a Money Tree? A Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
Cutting propagation: Choose healthy, robust branches, take cuttings with two palmate leaves and soak them in rooting solution. Remove them, rinse clean with water, insert them into a perlite medium and water thoroughly. Seed propagation: Sow the seeds in a medium, cover with 2 cm of fine soil, and place in a semi-shaded spot, keeping it moist. Grafting propagation: Use the same plant as the rootstock, select a young shoot with 3 buds as the scion, and use the young-shoot cleft grafting method.
Propagation Methods for the Money Tree
1. Seed propagation
After its fruit ripens, we can pick it, crack open the husk, take out the seeds inside, and sow the seeds immediately. Before sowing, prepare the soil in advance; the soil used is generally plain sand, the sowing spacing is usually 5×10 cm, and the seeds are buried about 3 to 4 cm deep under the soil.
After sowing, place the flower pot in a basin full of water and let it soak through. Keep the temperature between 25°C and 30°C, and the seeds will sprout in about a week. When the seedlings have grown about 4 leaves, they can be moved into pots for final planting. When planting them in pots, be careful to plant them shallowly, with the roots appropriately exposed above the soil surface.
2. Cutting propagation
This propagation method makes it very easy to obtain material, the survival rate is also very high, and many plants can be propagated at the same time. The specific procedure is: choose branches from the top as cuttings and insert them into soil prepared in advance; generally plain sand is chosen as the substrate soil. After inserting them, water thoroughly once, and it is best to cover them with a layer of transparent film, which provides a very good moisture-retaining effect.
Place the inserted branches in an environment of 25 to 28°C, and they will take root in about half a month. This method can be used throughout the year in our country, but in the north it is only suitable from May to August. In summer, pay attention to shading.
3. Grafting propagation
Some varieties of the money tree can also be propagated this way, and its advantage is that it can maintain the characteristics of the mother plant. Usually this method can be used in August and September. Use the plant itself as the rootstock, select a young shoot with 3 buds as the scion, and use the young-shoot cleft grafting method. After grafting, place it in a plastic tent to prevent the newly grafted branches from being rained on. As long as you care for it carefully, it can grow into a sapling that same year.
