Kadsura coccinea is a vine plant. Whether grown in pots or in the open field, it takes about 3 years to bear fruit, reaches full fruiting at 4 years, and the full fruiting period lasts 10-15 years. It can be planted in all four seasons, mainly with farmyard manure. During the growth period, strengthen trellis management, prune shoots and buds in time, and control pests and diseases.

Kadsura coccinea Planting Techniques

1. Cultivation Methods

Seedlings must be soaked in water for 2 hours before planting. Place the seedling upright, spread the root system evenly in all directions, backfill with fine soil, and while backfilling lift the seedling gently upward with your hand so that the soil makes good contact with the root system, then gradually firm the backfilled soil. The height must not exceed 2 cm above the upper part of the roots, then water thoroughly to settle the roots.

2. Fertilization Methods

Mainly apply farmyard manure and rapeseed oil cake. Apply about 800 kg of farmyard manure per mu, and 50 kg each of phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, applied in a ditch around the outer edge of the planting site, then cover with a layer of fine soil.

3. Management Work

Set up trellises. Pineapple grape is a vine plant and its growth management is the same as that of grapes. After planting, trellises must be set up. In the year of planting, simple supports can be set up, or dwarfed cultivation can be used to control the growth of secondary shoots.

Prune shoots and buds. In the first year after planting, keep three buds per plant. If the main trunk produces one bud, wait until the new shoot grows to 2-5 leaves and then pinch off the growing tip. After pinching, secondary shoots will sprout. Keep three strong buds and remove all other buds. Commonly known as the “three dragons”: keep three main vines, and for other secondary shoots keep 1-2 leaves and repeatedly pinch off the growing tips. Repeat this keeping of shoots and pinching of tips until after autumn, with the aim of controlling the top and promoting the bottom, so that the upper main buds are stimulated but do not sprout, and the lower main buds develop plump and fuller, using the lower buds as the fruiting mother branches for the next year.

4. Pest and Disease Control

Generally, for disease control, spray carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, thiram, chlorothalonil, etc. For pest and disease control, spray some aversectin non-toxic and harmless pesticides, or spray fenpropathrin, bifenthrin, beta-cypermethrin, etc. to control insect pests.
