When is the best time to plant strawberries?
Strawberries are mostly sown and raised as seedlings in spring each year, or alternatively in July-August of the same year the seeds are collected. Because they are perennial plants, depending on regional environmental differences and variety, they can be planted in all four seasons in many places.
Strawberry planting methods
1. Strawberries are suited to planting in soil that is sunny and well drained. The soil depth should be about 15-20 cm.
2. For large strawberry plants, the row spacing should be 30 cm and the plant spacing about 45 cm. Remove the runners from the plants promptly to help the strawberries fruit. Strawberry yields are cyclical, so it is best to cultivate some new plants in the first few years of planting.
3. If you do not like managing strawberries, you can plant one strawberry every 45-60 cm, so the strawberries can spread and grow freely. Of course, it will look a bit messy, and the strawberries will not be large. If you want to avoid this, you can remove some of the runners as appropriate.
4. In autumn, spread a layer of soil over the plants to prevent frost damage. After the soil freezes, you can spread another 5-10 cm of dry grass over the plants. In spring of the following year, once new leaves have grown, remove the dry grass again. Once the weather turns warm and stable, remove the covering soil from the surface of the plants. But leave some dry grass between the rows to prevent weeds from growing and to keep the soil moist.
The above are the strawberry planting methods. What people need to note is that the soil should be fertile and loose, and it should be loosened and weeded regularly, with plenty of organic fertilizer applied. Strawberries like warmth, so in winter they must be kept moist to overwinter, and the soil should be kept moist.
