A Detailed Guide to Cilantro Planting Techniques and Management Methods
Cilantro planting includes variety selection, planting and cultivation, water and fertilizer management, and pest and disease control. You can choose open-field or greenhouse planting. Open-field planting can be done in spring, autumn, and winter, while greenhouse planting is direct-sown in September-October.
Details of cilantro planting techniques are as follows:
1. Variety selection
Shandong large-leaf cilantro is suitable for planting in the Shandong region, Beijing cilantro is suitable for places such as the suburbs of Beijing, and Baihua cilantro is suitable for planting in the suburbs of Shanghai. Different regions should choose the most suitable planting variety according to the local growing environment.
2. Planting and cultivation
For home planting, rub open the outer husk of the cilantro seeds to be sown, then evenly scatter the treated cilantro seeds in the potting soil, and cover with a thin layer of soil. Basically, in about a week, the cilantro will mostly have sprouted.
If planting in the open field, you should choose a plot with loose soil, rich organic matter, and convenient drainage and irrigation. After the previous crop is harvested, plow the soil in time to a depth of 15-20 cm, and let it weather and sun-dry for more than 2 weeks. Then spread 4000-5000 kg of fully decomposed high-quality farmyard manure and 10-15 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. After plowing and raking, make beds with a surface width of 140-150 cm and a height of 20-25 cm, with the length determined by the length of the plot, and a ditch width of 30-40 cm, which also serves as a footpath. The bed surface requires fine, loose, and level soil.
3. Water and fertilizer management
When most of the cilantro has successfully emerged, the mulch should be removed in time, but in summer it is still necessary to do a good job of shading and cooling. Start watering after the seedlings are fully established, usually once a week, but the specific frequency should be determined according to the growth situation and surrounding weather changes. When the seedlings grow to a certain height, topdressing needs to begin. Urea and boron fertilizer can be used for topdressing. During the mature growth stage, a small amount of monopotassium phosphate can be added appropriately, which is beneficial for increasing yield.
4. Pest and disease control
Pay attention to the occurrence of diseases such as sclerotinia rot, root rot, powdery mildew, leaf blight, and spot blight, and do preventive work in advance. Use pesticides promptly on diseased plants, and immediately remove and destroy those with more severe conditions.
