How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for a Long Time? Practical Fresh-Keeping Methods Shared
Cut off a section from the bottom of the fresh flowers (cut at a diagonal angle), and at the same time add a crushed vitamin tablet or sugar to the vase. After it fully dissolves, put the fresh flowers into the vase. This can keep the fresh flowers looking as if they were just cut. Alternatively, add a purchased flower preservative, beer, or leftover tea to the vase; these are also methods that can extend how long fresh flowers keep.
Several common methods for caring for fresh flowers:
1. Carnation care
1. Remove the leaves that would be inserted to the depth of the water, cut the base at a diagonal angle, and then insert into water, keeping good air circulation between the flower stems. During this period, do not spray water on the flowers, to avoid rot.
2. They must be kept away from overripe vegetables and fruits, incense, smoke, and so on. Adding an anti-ethylene preservative to the water is even better.
3. To make them bloom earlier, re-cut the flower stems and insert them into a warm water preservative solution at 20-24°C.
2. Rose care
1. To prevent the flower heads from bending over (a condition known as bent neck), cut the stem base at a diagonal angle, wrap the flowers and leaves properly in newspaper, and immerse the whole bunch in water to absorb it.
2. If bent neck has already occurred, trim off the base in warm water and insert into a preservative solution with a pH of 3.5-4.5 and they can recover.
3. When tidying them up, you can remove the loose outer petals, and remove the thorns and leaves that would be inserted into the water. To prevent bacteria from infecting the wounds, use bleach water or a preservative so the vase life is longer.
4. Keep them away from overripe fruits (such as bananas and apples), incense and smoke, and so on, to avoid early withering.
3. Lily care
1. Spread the flower stems apart to let them breathe, cut off 3-5 cm from the base before inserting into water, and remove the leaves below the water level.
2. When the flowers open, remove the flower parts (stamens) promptly, so that if they accidentally touch clothing it is not hard to clean.
3. Adding bleach water or a preservative can extend the flowering period.
4. If you want them to bloom earlier, you can insert them into warm water. In addition, they need to be kept away from overripe vegetables and fruits, incense, smoke, and so on.
To preserve fresh flowers, remember to keep them away from the ripening agent ethylene (contained in ripe fruits and vegetables), keep them away from direct sunlight in summer, keep them away from drafts in winter, and also pay attention to sterilization and maintaining a suitable temperature.
