How Do Cacti Reproduce? A Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
Cacti can be propagated through division, cuttings, and grafting. Among these, cuttings are the most commonly used method in home cultivation and have a relatively high survival rate, and can be done in spring, summer, and autumn.
Cactus cultivation techniques:
1. Potting soil selection
Cacti prefer well-drained, slightly alkaline, fertile sandy soil. For home cultivation of cacti, the potting soil can be made by mixing 2 parts compost, 4 parts garden soil, and 4 parts river sand.
2. Flower pot selection
Choose a small pot, not a large one; generally, it only needs to be slightly larger than the plant itself. Place some small tile pieces at the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. When planting, do not bury it too deep; it just needs to stand steadily.
3. Ventilation and shade
Sunlight promotes the growth of cacti, so they should be exposed to plenty of sunlight, but in midsummer they need shade to prevent sunburn damage from direct strong light. They should also be placed in a well-ventilated spot. In addition, cacti are prone to frost damage when the temperature is below 5°C, so protection against cold damage is needed in winter.
4. Water and fertilizer
Cacti are drought-tolerant, so it is better to water less rather than more; never let water accumulate in the pot, and keeping it half-moist is sufficient. June to August is the season of vigorous growth for cacti, and generally they should be watered once a day. Keep the soil moist, pay attention to drainage during the rainy season, and do not water during the dormant period. For stems with fuzz or white powder, and for grafted areas, never water the stem. Fertilize during the season of vigorous growth, and it is best to use fully decomposed organic fertilizer or fertilizer containing residue for watering.
During the dormant period of cacti, that is, in early spring in March or in autumn in October, repotting should be carried out. They can be repotted 1-2 times each year, and new potting soil should be added when repotting.
