Building the rack bed: The rack bed is built with wood, straw, plastic film, wire and red bricks. Cultivation management: select garlic seed, arrange seed soaking before sowing; water appropriately according to temperature changes and control the temperature inside the greenhouse well. Harvest at the right time: once the garlic sprouts reach a height of 30-35 cm, harvesting can be arranged.

Greenhouse Garlic Growing Techniques

I. Building the rack bed

The rack bed is built with wood, straw, plastic film, wire and red bricks. A layer of plastic film is laid on each tier, and 5-6 cm of sandy loam is placed on the film and patted firm. When setting up the rack bed, be sure to bury it firmly and tie it tightly to prevent the rack bed from collapsing.

II. Cultivation and management methods

Choosing garlic seed: choose varieties with large and numerous cloves, high yield, a short dormancy period, and fast emergence and growth.

Preparation before sowing: soak the garlic seed in warm water at 30°C-50°C for about 30 hours, so that the garlic bulbs absorb water and swell. Then take them out, drain the water, pile them up and cover them for about 12 hours, then dig out the garlic stems. If the sowing area is large and a large amount of seed is soaked, you may also sow one week earlier without removing the stems.

Arranging the garlic and pressing the soil: place and bury about 15 kg of garlic cloves per 1 sq m; the tighter the cloves are placed against each other, the better, and fill larger gaps with smaller cloves. After the cloves are arranged, cover them with 3 cm of fine sandy soil and pat firm.

Water management: water the garlic sprouts with water no lower than 15°C; from after planting to the early growth stage, water heavily; at the mid stage when the sprouts are about 15 cm tall, water moderately; in the late growth stage, 3-4 days before harvest, water lightly. The number of waterings should depend on how dry or moist the soil on the rack bed is.

Temperature control: keep the greenhouse film surface clean to improve light transmission, so as to obtain more light hours. The temperature requirements for the rack bed are: before full emergence, 24°C-26°C during the day and 20°C-22°C at night; after full emergence, 22°C-24°C during the day and 18°C-22°C at night; when the sprouts are about 15 cm tall, 16°C-22°C during the day and 16°C-18°C at night; at harvest, 18°C during the day and 12°C at night.

Harvest at the right time: when the garlic sprouts reach a height of about 35 cm and the leaves are slightly leaning, this is the suitable harvest period, and they should be harvested promptly. After the first crop of garlic sprouts is harvested, use the same management methods as above, and new garlic sprouts will grow again after 20 days. When the new garlic sprouts grow to about 30 cm, they can be harvested and sold again. With such cyclical management and harvesting, 3-4 crops can be harvested continuously.
