Cypress vine is generally sown in mid-April, and can be sown in an open-ground seedbed or in pots. Besides growing cypress vine from seed, propagation by cuttings is also a commonly used method. Moreover, the survival rate of cypress vine cuttings is very high, and they can be taken in spring, summer and autumn.

Pot cultivation methods for cypress vine:

1. Potting up: Cypress vine can be transplanted into pots 7-9 weeks after sowing. The pot diameter should preferably be 10-15 cm; a 10 cm pot can hold 1 seedling, and a 15 cm pot can hold 1-2 seedlings. Before potting up, fertilizer should be applied moderately to make the plants grow strong, so as to reduce the shock that potting up causes to the plants.

2. Medium: For the cultivation medium of cypress vine, use sterile peat soil that contains a little fertilizer and drains well, with a pH of preferably 6.5-6.8, to avoid iron toxicity and magnesium deficiency. If the pH is lower than 6.0, iron toxicity will cause severe leaf-edge scorching and cause the plants to stop growing.

3. Temperature: Warm heat and sufficient sunlight help the growth of cypress vine. During the growing period, the night temperature should preferably be kept above 17-18°C and the day temperature above 22-24°C. A temperature below 10°C will make flowering uneven and delay or hinder the opening of the flowers.

4. Light: Cypress vine likes an environment with sufficient sunlight. The stronger the light, the more compact and stocky the plants, so in winter, with weak light and short days, attention should be paid to supplementing the light.

5. Watering: In summer, cypress vine should be watered thoroughly, applied evenly around the pot soil until water flows out from the bottom of the pot, once each in the morning and evening; just do not let it dry out. In winter, water once every two to three days.

6. Fertilizing: One week after cypress vine is planted out, start applying a 800-1000 times dilution of “Yelüjing”, watering once every 7-10 days. When the plants enter the mid-growth stage (that is, a plant height of 8-10 cm), the fertilizer can be changed to an 800-1000 times solution of “Kaihuajing”, once a week, to promote flower-bud differentiation and good growth.

Cypress vine is an annual twining herbaceous plant, very suitable for beautifying fences, railings and the like.
