Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is one of the common flowering plants in our country, with a beautiful appearance and great elegance; it is now commonly seen in parks, courtyards and pots, where it serves as a very good decorative element. So what color is winter jasmine? How is it planted in pots?

1. What color is winter jasmine?

Winter jasmine is yellow. The flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils of the previous year's branchlets, rarely at the tips of the branchlets; the bracts are leaf-like, lanceolate, ovate or elliptic, 3-8 mm long and 1.5-4 mm wide; the pedicels are 2-3 mm long; the calyx is green, with 5-6 lobes, narrowly lanceolate, 4-6 mm long and 1.5-2.5 mm wide, with acute tips; the corolla is yellow, 2-2.5 cm in diameter, the corolla tube 0.8-2 cm long, 1.5-2 mm in diameter at the base, gradually widening upward, with 5-6 lobes, oblong or elliptic, 0.8-1.3 cm long and 3-6 mm wide, with acute or rounded-obtuse tips. The flowering period is June.

2. How is winter jasmine planted in pots?

1. Choosing a flower pot

For winter jasmine, it is generally best to use a purple clay pottery pot or a glazed pottery pot in a medium-to-deep color, and the shape of the pot is determined according to the style of the winter jasmine bonsai. For a cliff-style winter jasmine bonsai, a deep cylindrical pot can be used; sometimes, to highlight the beauty of the roots, a shallow pot is also used. The pot color is best chosen to set off the beauty of the small yellow flowers of winter jasmine, such as deep blue, light blue, or purplish red.

2. Bonsai styling

Because winter jasmine's branches naturally droop and its roots have distinctive features, it is very suitable for working into the weeping-branch style and the exposed-root style, and the two are often combined, with gnarled roots exposed and the main trunk made into a horizontal-trunk or curved-trunk style, while the small branches droop and brush about, giving it a distinctive charm.

3. Pruning techniques

After digging up the winter jasmine, cut off the branches, because if there are too many branches, the plant will die when the roots are damaged; if the branches are too short, the branches and buds are not easily produced. Plant it with one third of the roots exposed. After planting, place it in a shady place and do not expose it to strong sun. Be careful not to water too much. Wait until it has survived, then look at the shape of the winter jasmine and prune it appropriately. The growth of winter jasmine branches must be controlled; if they are too long, it will affect the handling of the overall shape.

4. Repotting requirements

Winter jasmine is generally repotted once every two years, preferably in spring or after leaf fall in autumn. When repotting, the roots can be pruned at the same time, cutting off dead roots and overly long roots to promote the development of fibrous roots. Soybean cake crumbs can also be placed at the bottom of the pot as a base fertilizer. For winter jasmine that needs exposed roots, the roots can be lifted appropriately when planting, and soil mounded around the roots; later, as watering leaches the soil away, the roots will naturally become exposed.

5. Watering

Winter jasmine likes moisture, especially in the hot summer; besides watering once every morning, it should also be watered appropriately in the afternoon. To maintain the humidity of the microclimate, water should often be sprayed on the ground. Winter jasmine is afraid of water accumulating in the pot; during the plum rain season, when rain continues for days, the pot should be laid on its side or moved to a place where it will not be rained on. In winter, when the temperature is low and water evaporates little, it should be watered less.

6. Fertilizing

During the growing period of winter jasmine, apply 1——2 times a month of thoroughly decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer. July—August is the flower bud differentiation period of winter jasmine, so liquid fertilizer containing more phosphorus should be applied to promote the formation of flower buds. If, before flowering, thoroughly decomposed dilute organic liquid fertilizer is applied once, it can make the flower color more brilliant and prolong the flowering period.
