How to prune a dragon tree? A detailed guide to the correct pruning method

There are two methods for pruning and shaping a dragon tree (Dracaena); one is the T-shape, and the other is stub pruning to build up branches. T-shape pruning is cutting the leaves off the lower part of the main stem, then shaping the main stem into a T; while stub pruning is cutting back a plant whose lower leaves have dropped off over the years, and selecting and keeping 2 to 3

There are two methods for pruning and shaping a dragon tree (Dracaena); one is the T-shape, and the other is stub pruning to build up branches. T-shape pruning is cutting the leaves off the lower part of the main stem, then shaping the main stem into a T; while stub pruning is cutting back a plant whose lower leaves have dropped off over the years, and selecting and keeping 2 to 3 side buds at suitable positions to cultivate. Note that after pruning you should give it plenty of sunlight and control watering.

1. Prepare the tools

The dragon tree grows fairly quickly, so it needs proper pruning every year. First, prepare a sharp pair of scissors, and disinfect them with alcohol, potassium permanganate solution or similar, so that you can prune the branches and leaves better and also prevent bacteria from infecting the wounds.

2. Slant-cut the dense leaves

The branches and leaves of the dragon tree grow very lushly every year, so usually the dense parts need to be trimmed back a little. Also, at 1cm from the old leaf blade and petiole, make a slanted cut with a sharp knife; this lets the plant keep growing, reduces the plant's consumption of soil nutrients, and encourages it to sprout more new branches and leaves.

3. Shaping and pruning

In fact, in the pruning steps for a dragon tree, after each pruning you can also trim back the branches and leaves that were not cut, and shape and prune according to a T-shaped plant form, keeping only the leaves at the top of the main stem; this increases the plant's ornamental value and is good for the dragon tree's growth.

4. Disinfection treatment

After each pruning of the dragon tree, if you do not treat it, its wounds are easily harmed by bacteria, affecting the plant's normal growth. Usually after each pruning you need to apply carbendazim fungicide as usual, and when pruning try to avoid pruning in rainy weather, otherwise the leaves will lose their color and their ornamental value will be reduced.
