Orange trees generally bloom between April and May, and bear fruit between October and December. During the growing period, orange trees need to be given sufficient light, water and fertilizer so that they can grow normally. During care, water and fertilize appropriately, and also regularly spray the orange trees with agents to prevent pests and diseases.

How are orange trees cultivated?

1. Planting of seedlings: When planting orange seedlings, moderately prune the root system of the seedling, then place it in the center of the planting hole, spread out the roots, hold it upright, and while filling with soil, gently lift the seedling upward and firm the soil. Water thoroughly to settle the roots, make a 1 m tree disc around the sapling, and cover it with rice husks. After the orange seedlings are planted, deep digging to expand the holes and mature the soil should be done well. It is forbidden to plant tall-stalk plants such as corn and wheat in the orchard, and tasks such as reasonable intercropping in the orchard and inter-row weeding should be done well.

2. Fertilizer and water management: Orange trees should fully satisfy the needs of blood oranges for various nutrient elements. It is advocated to apply more organic fertilizer, rationally apply inorganic fertilizer and formula fertilizer, and guide fertilization according to leaf analysis results, orchard soil analysis results, blood orange phenological periods, and so on. Soil fertilization is the main method, combined with foliar fertilization. Methods such as ring trench application, strip trench application, hole application and spreading fertilizer on the soil surface are used. Irrigate when the soil is dry, and drain when there is standing water.

3. Rational fertilization: Orange trees should be fertilized frequently and lightly, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer, combined with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and fertilized 5 to 6 times during the sprouting periods of spring, summer and autumn shoots. Adult trees should be given four good fertilizations, namely bud fertilizer, fruit-preserving fertilizer, fruit-strengthening fertilizer and post-harvest fertilizer. Bud fertilizer: 2 to 3 jin of chemical fertilizer and one load of manure water; fruit-preserving fertilizer: 1 to 2 jin of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and 1 jin of chemical fertilizer; fruit-strengthening fertilizer: 1 to 2 jin of chemical fertilizer and 2 jin of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; post-harvest fertilizer: 50 to 100 jin of organic fertilizer and 2 jin of chemical fertilizer per tree.

4. Pruning techniques: In the young tree stage, after selecting the central leader-like extension branch and the extension branches of each main branch and sub-main branch, moderately or even severely cut them back, and regulate the growth balance among the main branches by the degree of cutting back and the direction of the pruning bud. In the fruiting stage, continue to choose to cut back the extension branches at all levels of the framework, remove summer shoots, and promote the growth of robust autumn shoots. In autumn, for vigorously growing trees, measures to promote flowering such as ring cutting, root pruning and water control are used.
