When do Northeast rice varieties mature? A detailed introduction to the harvest time
Northeast rice matures around mid-October each year. Its maturation takes about 5 months, and the main producing areas are Shangzhi, Wuchang, Zhaodong and other places in Heilongjiang.
Identifying Northeast rice:
1. Check hardness: the hardness of rice grains is mainly determined by the protein content. The harder the rice, the higher the protein content, and the higher the transparency. Generally, new rice is harder than old rice, rice with low moisture is harder than rice with high moisture, and late rice is harder than early rice.
2. Check the white belly: rice often has an opaque white spot on its belly. When the white spot is in the center of the grain, it is called “heart white”; when it is on the outer belly, it is called “outer white”. The white belly part of the rice has a lower protein content and contains more starch. —Generally, rice with excessively high moisture, or paddy that has not undergone after-ripening after harvest and is not fully mature, has a larger white belly.
3. Check for cracked waist: when selecting rice, carefully observe the surface of the grains. If one or more horizontal cracks appear on a grain, it indicates cracked-waist rice.
4. Check yellow grains: when purchasing, be sure to observe how many yellow-grained rice kernels there are. In addition, if the rice contains many “dead green” grains, the quality of the rice is also poorer.
5. Check whether it is new or old: if the rice has undergone relatively severe aging, old rice becomes darker in color, less sticky, and loses its original rice fragrance. Therefore, rice with a grayish powdery surface or white grooved lines is old rice, and the greater the amount, the older the rice. At the same time, you can scoop up the rice and smell it to check whether the odor is normal. If there is a musty smell, it indicates old rice. In addition, if insect-damaged grains and dead insects appear, it indicates old rice. To identify moldy rice, mainly examine aspects such as the color and odor of the rice.
Real Northeast rice tastes good and is rich in nutrients, and its price is also higher than ordinary rice. Therefore, when purchasing, be sure to distinguish it carefully and do not let unscrupulous merchants pass off inferior goods as good ones.
