Tea Pruning and Picking

Correctly pruning the branches of tea plants at the appropriate time is very necessary for coordinating the growth vigor of the tea plant, increasing tea yield, and ensuring quality. Tea pruning mainly includes three steps: determining the main trunk, bud removal work, and shaping and pruning. Generally, after three to four rounds of pruning, the main trunk of the tea plant can be made prominent. In the first pruning, three or four relatively thick branches are usually selected from the tea plant and kept as the main branches for further training;

In the second pruning, two to three more branches are selected from the previously retained branches. By repeating this process, a main trunk of about one meter can be pruned out, establishing the overall shape of the tea plant.

Scientifically determining the timing of tea picking is significant in two ways: on the one hand, the quality of the picked tea leaves can be ensured, and on the other hand, negative effects on the healthy development of the tea plant can be avoided. In practice, based on the tea plant’s distinctive characteristic of “early picking, early sprouting”, a basic method of tea picking has been developed.
