Detailed Guide to Lotus Planting Techniques: From Cultivation to Daily Care Essentials
Prepare some healthy, plump lotus seeds and break a small hole in the outer shell, then place them in water to soak for a week, changing the water once a day during soaking. Once the seeds sprout, sow them in a pond and cover them with soil. When flower buds appear or the plant flowers and sets fruit, apply an appropriate amount of base fertilizer, weed frequently, and keep the water clean, and the lotus will grow.
Planting techniques for potted lotus:
1. Choose excellent varieties
It is best to choose highly ornamental varieties such as Manjianghong, Little Fairy, and Table Lotus. These varieties have a smaller plant type, bloom more, and have brilliant flower colors, making them suitable for cultivation. If using seed lotus rhizomes for planting, choose rhizomes that are undamaged, growing well, and have intact terminal buds.
2. Choose a container
The choice of flowerpot is very particular. Usually, choose a flowerpot with a diameter between 30 and 60 cm, and a height not exceeding 50 cm.
3. Soil requirements
For planting lotus, it is best to use soil rich in humus, usually lake or pond mud. You can also mix garden soil, loess, and sandy soil in a 4:3:3 ratio and stir them evenly to prepare it. Never use sludge from sewers.
4. Flexible planting time
Because China is vast, the difference in latitude between north and south is quite large. Therefore, when choosing the planting time, you must also adapt to local conditions. Near the Yangtze River basin, planting around Qingming Festival is most suitable. In the north, at higher latitudes, the time should be postponed to late April; once the temperature rises to about 15 degrees, it can be planted.
5. Cultivation method
Place the seed lotus rhizome flat or with the top tilted downward at an angle of 20 to 50 degrees, and bury the rhizome into the soil along the inner wall of the container. Be careful to leave the tail end exposed outside the mud. Only one seed rhizome needs to be placed in one flowerpot.
6. Watering
In the early stage of lotus growth, do not water too much; just maintain a water depth of 3-5 cm. As the temperature continues to rise, after the lotus emerges from the water, keep the water depth at 16 cm. In winter, after the lotus enters dormancy, keeping shallow water is enough, and there is no need to add water frequently. Never underestimate this management step; whether the lotus grows well depends entirely on it!
