Plants that spread their seeds by the sun include garden balsam, peas, wood sorrel, chestnuts, squirting cucumbers, soybeans, hemp, cruciferous plants, and more. The fruit of the garden balsam dries out in the sun and splits open, flinging its seeds in all directions. The pods of peas burst open when scorched in the sun, and the peas inside jump away. When the fruit of the squirting cucumber ripens and is dried by the sun, it squirts out its seeds.

1. Garden balsam

Garden balsam, also called touch-me-not, quick-tempered seed, and daughter flower, is widely cultivated in gardens throughout China. Its flowering period is from July to October, and it bears fruit after flowering; the capsule is broadly spindle-shaped, 10-20 mm long, pointed at both ends, and densely covered with soft hairs. The seeds are round, 1.5-3 mm in diameter, and dark brown.

2. Pea

The pea, also called green pea, wheat pea, cold pea, wheat bean, snow pea, Bi bean, hemp pea, Dutch pea, and Huihu bean, is mainly distributed in the central and northeastern regions and other areas. Its fruiting period is from July to September; the pod is oblong, 2.5-10 cm long and 0.7-14 cm wide, with a slanted, sharply pointed tip and an almost straight back; there are 2-10 seeds, round, green when fresh and turning yellow when dry.

3. Squirting cucumber

The squirting cucumber, also called cannon cucumber, has the most powerful fruit, and is cultivated in northern China. Its fruit looks like a large cucumber; the fruit is pale green, oblong or ovate-oblong, 4-5 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, covered with short yellowish-brown bristles, and becomes extremely swollen after ripening. After it falls from the fruit stalk, a hole opens at the base, and as the pulp contracts it squirts out the seeds and fruit liquid together. The seeds are brown or nearly black, about 4 mm long.
