Some rhododendrons can be eaten, and some cannot. For example, yellow rhododendrons and white rhododendrons contain a certain amount of toxins, and eating them will cause poisoning. However, Rhododendron crassipes in the central Yunnan region is edible.

The five major groups of rhododendrons:

1. Spring rhododendron

Refers to varieties that bloom first and then sprout, flowering in mid-to-late April and early May. The so-called spring rhododendron was first mainly introduced from Japan to Shanghai for cultivation by Mr. Shen Yuanru in the 1920s-1930s, while local flower growers formed unique domestic varieties through selection and hybridization of the original species. Because it blooms in spring, it was named spring rhododendron, and this name has continued to the present day.

2. Summer rhododendron

In spring it first grows branches and leaves, and blooms in early May to June, so it is called summer rhododendron. The main parents of summer rhododendron are said to be Rhododendron indicum and Rhododendron mayense.

3. East rhododendron

East rhododendron is a variety of Japan's Rhododendron obtusum and its many hybrid descendants. It was introduced from Japan, and it is called east rhododendron to correspond with western rhododendron. East rhododendron blooms in spring, and in some places it is included among spring rhododendrons.

4. West rhododendron

Because its flowers are gorgeous, it is a type deeply welcomed by people. In particular, the Belgian rhododendron, because it is a horticultural cultivar hybridized in Europe and America, is called western rhododendron, also known as west rhododendron. After Japan introduced it in 1892, the names of west rhododendron varieties were translated into Japanese, so those introduced to China from Japan still use the Japanese translated names. At the same time, China also used west rhododendrons for further hybridization and bred a batch of new varieties. Therefore, there are about 200-300 varieties of west rhododendron in China.

5. Alpine rhododendron

Alpine rhododendron is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the family Ericaceae that grows in alpine areas.

In addition to ornamental value, rhododendrons also have certain medicinal and edible value. However, for your own safety, friends without experience should still not eat rhododendrons casually.
