When to Plant Fava Beans? A Detailed Guide to Planting Time and Methods
Fava beans generally have two planting times, spring sowing and autumn sowing. Spring sowing takes place in March-April each year, and autumn sowing is concentrated in October-November. Choose relatively fertile soil, then arrange an appropriate watering schedule and topdressing schedule, and simply pay more attention to pests and diseases.
Fava Bean Planting Time and Methods
1. Time
Because different regions have certain differences in climate, the planting time also differs, so what we need to pay attention to is deciding the planting time according to the specific climate conditions of the location. In our country, planting is generally carried out in the autumn and winter seasons, and it is best to sow around October to November, while in some places the suitable sowing period for fava beans is around January to February or around March to April, so the planting time is a small issue that needs attention.
2. Soil
The soil for planting fava beans is best as fertile, well-drained sandy soil or loam rich in organic matter, in which the soil pH should be moderate, and slightly alkaline soil is also a good choice. What should be noted here is that the previous crop in the selected planting site cannot be melons, fruits or legumes, and continuous cropping cannot be carried out on the same piece of land, as this will all affect the growth of fava beans.
3. Temperature
The most suitable temperature for the growth of fava beans is around 20 to 25 degrees, and the temperature at which fava beans most easily germinate is around 16 to 18 degrees, so we must plant strictly according to the living habits of fava beans, so that fava beans can grow better and the yield will be higher.
4. Fertilizer and Water
Fava beans should be watered heavily when necessary, and after the soil is thoroughly wet, drainage should be carried out in time, and drainage should also be carried out in time during heavy rainfall. Therefore, we can only apply some nitrogen fertilizer in an appropriate amount, and then reasonably apply potassium fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer.
