Introduction to Common Beans

1. The common bean, also called kidney bean, green bean, sieva bean, scarlet runner bean, white bean, sword bean, jade bean, etc., is a cultivated species of the genus Phaseolus in the Fabaceae family, and is an annual twining herbaceous plant. The common bean originated in the tropical mountainous regions of Central America and northern South America, spread to Europe in the 16th century, then from France to Africa, was introduced to the United States from Spain, then to the Philippines, and was introduced to China in the 1940s. After the 1980s, with development, the common bean has become one of the main high-quality legume vegetables, and a famous bean dish, in northern China and even across the country.

2. The common bean has a taproot system with well-developed roots, and the main root develops from the radicle within the seed. Many root nodules also grow on the lateral roots and multi-level fine roots. During the seedling stage, the main root develops quickly and is very obvious; by the mature plant stage, the main root can penetrate more than 80 cm into the soil. The common bean has few fibrous roots, and the root system has weak regeneration ability, so root-protective cultivation is needed in production, and the seedling age period should not be too long, generally cultivating at the 1-pair true leaf stage. Because the root nodules can fix nitrogen for the plant's own use, the use of nitrogen fertilizer can be reduced.
