Beautiful roses are surely no stranger to everyone, because their symbolic meaning is special and their flower colors are quite numerous, making them relatively popular among many flowers. Nowadays some flower lovers also grow them in pots at home to enjoy and decorate their environment. However, during the growing process various situations often arise, such as failing to bloom on schedule, withered leaves, root rot, and so on. Below let us take a look at exactly how to grow potted roses properly.

1. Soil and growing environment requirements

The potting soil requirements for potted roses are somewhat higher than those for ground cultivation. Generally, choose soil that is loose, well-draining and fairly fertile. Remember not to choose clay, as it will affect the quality of the roses, or cause poor growth of the whole plant.

If you grow potted roses indoors, you can place them on a balcony with plenty of sunlight, so that the color and quality of the flowers will be better.

If not placed on a balcony, they should be placed far from walls in a well-ventilated spot, to avoid the reflected sunlight from the wall scorching the flower buds and affecting blooming.

2. Watering method

Potted roses do not need much water, because they are fairly drought-tolerant and very afraid of waterlogging, so we should decide the amount of watering according to their growth condition and the season. Water again when the soil is on the dry side, and water thoroughly each time. If too much water is given during the rainy season, waterlogging and root rot easily occur, causing the whole plant to die.

To make the roses bloom more brilliantly and larger, we should change the potting soil once a year, and when changing the potting soil, cut off the encircling roots at the bottom of the pot.

3. Fertilizing method

Besides giving potted roses sufficient base fertilizer, normally they do not need overly rich fertilizer, because it will burn the roots and cause root rot; in particular, do not use chemical fertilizers.

Topdressing should be decided according to the growth of the roses, the size of the plant and the size of the pot. Generally, apply a compound fertilizer as topdressing once every one and a half months, or rice-washing water can also be used for watering, about once or twice a month.

Types of compound fertilizer include phosphorus-potassium fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer, and so on. Remember not to apply too much fertilizer at one time; fertilize frequently and lightly.

4. Pruning work

Pruning potted roses is also a very necessary step, mainly cutting off branches attacked by pests and diseases, faded flowers, withered branches and overly dense branches. Pruning is also a little secret for good rose growth and abundant blooming. If it is the overwintering season, you can cut the branches to 10cm above the ground, which helps it overwinter smoothly.

5. Pest and disease control

Common pests and diseases of potted roses include scale insects and green caterpillars. Both pests can cause infection of the plant, especially scale insects, which are relatively difficult to control once they occur. So when caring for potted roses normally, cut off excess branches and place them in a ventilated environment with good light.
