Soil: The dwarf umbrella tree (Schefflera arboricola) is suited to deep, loose, fertile soil. Watering: The dwarf umbrella tree grows well in an environment with sufficient soil moisture; replenish water promptly in daily care, but do not let water accumulate. Temperature: It is best kept in a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. The dwarf umbrella tree is not cold-tolerant, so in winter the room temperature should be kept above 10℃.

Soil

The planting soil for the dwarf umbrella tree should be deep, loose and fertile. For household pot cultivation, use leaf mold or peat soil and garden soil, mixed evenly with 1/4 river sand or perlite. To ensure the soil is fertile, a small amount of cake fertilizer can be added to the soil as a base fertilizer.

Method of potting and planting

Choose a healthy young seedling with a well-developed, intact root system and plant it in a pot in late autumn or before it sprouts in spring.

Before planting, place a layer of broken tiles at the bottom of the container, add a small amount of nutrient soil, and after placing the plant in the flower pot add a small amount of soil so the roots and soil are tightly combined. Then water thoroughly and firm the soil. After the newly potted plant is established, it should first be placed in a semi-shaded spot for one week, then gradually moved to a sunny spot for normal care.

Watering

The dwarf umbrella tree grows well in an environment with high air humidity and sufficient soil moisture. In daily care, take care to replenish water promptly, but do not let water accumulate, otherwise it will cause a large number of leaves to drop. Under low-temperature conditions in winter, pay attention to controlling water.

If the dwarf umbrella tree is kept in a plastic flower pot, take care to drain promptly; when watering, water promptly before the soil dries out completely, keeping the soil moist at all times. When the weather is dry, spray around the plant; during the plum rain season, take care to shelter it from rain to avoid water accumulating in the pot.

Sunlight and temperature

The dwarf umbrella tree likes a semi-shaded environment and is best kept in a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light, so keeping one at home is ideal. As long as the light at home is bright, it can be enjoyed for a long time. In winter it can be moved near a south-facing window; in spring and autumn the flower pot can be moved outdoors to a well-ventilated spot for a period of care, but take care to provide appropriate shade so that intense sun exposure does not cause the leaves to turn yellow and dry.

The dwarf umbrella tree is not cold-tolerant, so in winter the room temperature should be kept above 10℃. If the room temperature stays below 8℃ for a long time, the leaves will gradually turn yellow and dry; if it drops below 0℃, the leaves will drop off. So winter, the hardest time for the dwarf umbrella tree, requires good control of the indoor temperature.

Repot and prune in time

The dwarf umbrella tree needs to be repotted once every spring; if a plastic pot is used, take care that the soil is somewhat looser.

The dwarf umbrella tree grows quickly and easily produces leggy shoots; to shape it into a mature plant it needs frequent shaping and pruning to keep the plant neat and attractive. A dwarf umbrella tree kept for many years has long-lived old branches, and if the plant becomes too large, it can be heavily pruned when new buds sprout each year, in combination with repotting, cutting back branches, leaves and old roots.

Points to note

If the dwarf umbrella tree was obtained from cuttings, do not rush to repot it for shaping; wait until growth is clearly established before repotting. Usually it is repotted after 2~3 years of growth, and once a year thereafter.

Create a comfortable care environment. Ensure the temperature is suitable, conditions are neither too dry nor too wet, watering is timely, water is sprayed on the leaves promptly in summer, and there is sufficient light duration.
