Detailed Explanation of Cowpea Planting Techniques and Management Key Points
To plant cowpeas, you must first select soil with high fertility, deep soil layers, good aeration, and high organic matter content. Clear weeds, pest sources, and pathogen sources, apply base fertilizer, and prepare the land into beds. Then select excellent varieties for sowing, using hole sowing, three to four seeds per hole, water thoroughly before sowing, and cover with 2cm of soil after sowing. After that, carry out management tasks such as fertilizing, watering, trellising, and intertillage weeding.
1. Site selection: It is advisable to choose soil with high fertility, deep soil layers, good aeration, and high organic matter content. Clear the previous crop's residual stems, fallen leaves, and weeds from the field, and eliminate pest and pathogen sources in the soil. Deep plow the land to a depth of 15-25cm; apply sufficient base fertilizer, with about 2500kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 30-50kg of vegetable-specific compound fertilizer per mu; prepare the land into beds with a bed width of about 80cm, a ditch width of about 40cm, and a ditch depth of 25-30cm.
2. Sowing: According to local climatic conditions, production season, market requirements, production habits, etc., select varieties with high yield, disease resistance, excellent quality, good pod appearance, uniform length, and good marketability, and also ensure the variety is genetically pure. Generally sow from early April to early August, using hole sowing, three to four seeds per hole, two rows per bed, with a hole (plant) spacing of about 25cm. Water thoroughly before sowing, and cover with 2cm of soil after sowing.
3. Management: After seedlings emerge uniformly, remove weak and inferior seedlings, leaving 2 seedlings per hole. When seedlings have five or six leaves, trellises should be set up to guide the vines; use an “A”-shaped trellis with a height of about 2m. From 10 days after emergence to the vine elongation stage, apply one or two light applications of farmyard manure, such as human excrement and urine, depending on growth conditions; at the beginning of flowering and when pods begin to form, water about once every 7 days, and after every 3-5 harvests, apply fertilizer once in combination with watering. Carry out intertillage and weeding, and control pests and diseases.
