When Do Lychees Ripen in Guangdong? A Detailed Guide to Ripening Times
Lychees in Guangdong ripen from May to August. Among them, the Qiangang Nuomici from Conghua City is available on the market from June 25 to July 5, and the Jinggang Hongnuo is available on the market from the end of June to mid-July. In addition, Shenzhen's Sanyuehong generally ripens in early to mid-May, while varieties such as Feizixiao, Heiye and Huaizhi ripen in mid-June.
Lychee planting and management:
1. Watering
Irrigation and drainage: water is an important component of the lychee tree. Young lychee trees have few and shallow roots and are greatly affected by changes in topsoil moisture. Under conditions of dry soil and dry air, attention should be paid to watering to maintain moisture. During the rainy season, prevent water from accumulating in the planting holes; for sunken plants, the planting position should be raised appropriately to facilitate normal growth.
2. Fertilizing
Fertilizing can begin one month after planting. Within the first two or three years, the focus is on increasing root mass and promoting and strengthening new shoots. Fertilizer and water management for 1-2 year old young trees after planting can promote root development and the total leaf area of branches and shoots. In addition, when fertilizing, pay attention to the application rate. In the first year, about 20 grams of urea can be applied per plant each time, or about 30 grams of compound fertilizer, or in each bucket of dilute human manure add 200-250 grams of urea or phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, 1-2 kg per plant per year. Starting from the second year, the amount of fertilizer should be gradually increased, by 50-60% on the basis of the previous year. As for the fertilizing method, in the first year it is best to dissolve the chemical fertilizer in water and sprinkle it within the tree basin; from the second year onward, a shallow furrow can be opened in the soil around the outer edge of the canopy and the fertilizer applied, then covered with soil, and watered promptly in dry conditions.
3. Weeding
Lychee mycorrhizae are aerobic, so weeding and loosening the soil help make the soil loose and aerated, and can promote root development. For young trees, weeding and loosening the soil can be carried out together with the management of intercrops. In summer and autumn, with high temperatures and frequent rain, weeds grow quickly and the soil tends to become compacted, so weeding and loosening should be done more often; in winter and spring, when temperatures are low and it is dry, weeds grow slowly, so weeding and loosening can be done less often.
Young trees have shallow roots, so loosening the soil within the root zone should be shallow, about 8-10 cm, and outside the root zone it can go as deep as about 15 cm.
Because lychees are grown in different regions and different varieties, the water and fertilizer applied also differ; generally, this should be determined according to actual conditions.
