Sugarcane cultivation and management:

1. Sugarcane fertilization

Sugarcane has a long growth period, tall plants and high yield. Therefore, throughout the entire growth period, the amount of fertilizer applied is one of the main factors determining whether the yield is high or low. Because sugarcane has a high fertilizer requirement, fertilizer accounts for a large proportion of sugarcane production costs. Therefore, correctly mastering fertilization techniques, applying fertilizer at the right time and in the right amount while meeting sugarcane's fertilizer needs to the greatest extent possible, is of great significance.

2. Sugarcane drainage and irrigation

Sugarcane requires a large amount of water throughout its life but is not tolerant of waterlogging. The overall trend of water requirement is “less at both ends, more in the middle.” That is, water requirement is low during the germination stage, tillering stage and maturity stage, and high during the elongation stage. Therefore, sugarcane fields should maintain a “moist--wet--moist” state respectively. The climate in Yunnan is dry in winter and spring and rainy in summer and autumn. Therefore, in the early stage of sugarcane growth, although the water requirement is low, irrigation should be strengthened. During the elongation stage, which coincides with the rainy season, irrigation is generally not needed. More than 80% of sugarcane fields in Yunnan have no irrigation conditions. Sugarcane is not tolerant of waterlogging; standing water in sugarcane fields can cause root rot, so timely drainage is needed.

3. Sugarcane weeding

Before sugarcane rows close, weeds tend to grow, consuming nutrients and shading sugarcane seedlings, so weeding in sugarcane fields should be carried out in a timely manner. This is generally done by hand in combination with intertillage and earthing up. Commonly used herbicides include “simazine” and “atrazine”. Using 200-250 grams per mu diluted in 50-75 kg of water and sprayed on the soil surface before sugarcane emerges gives good results, with efficacy lasting 3-4 months. One spraying can solve the weed problem during the seedling stage.

Sugarcane is a plant that likes warmth and light, so it is relatively suitable for planting in China's Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan, Fujian, Sichuan, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Zhejiang, Hainan and Hubei and other regions.
