How to Fertilize Peppers for High Yield? A Detailed Guide to Fertilization Methods
To get a high yield from peppers, you need to fertilize several times. In addition to the base fertilization, three more rounds of fertilization are needed: once at the seedling stage, the second at the flowering stage, and the third during the fruiting period. Peppers begin to set fruit after flowering and pollination, entering the fruit enlargement stage. At this time, they also need plenty of water and fertilizer.
How should peppers be fertilized to achieve high yield?
(1) Seedling fertilizer: Pepper seedlings have a long growing period and weak root regeneration ability, and peppers should not be grown in continuous cropping. For raising seedlings, choose land where solanaceous vegetables have not been grown for 2~3 years to make the beds. The organic fertilizer applied should be fully decomposed, finely crushed and sifted, at 5000~8000 kg per mu, plus 500 g of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer and 10 g of carbendazim per sq m. Generally no topdressing is done at the seedling stage. If deficiency symptoms appear, such as slow seedling growth, thin and weak stems, and narrow small leaves, a small amount of urea can be applied with watering 15~20 days before transplanting to promote seedling growth. The amount must not be too much, to prevent the seedlings from growing leggy.
(2) Base fertilizer: The base fertilizer for peppers should mainly be high-quality barnyard manure, generally 5000~8000 kg per mu, spread evenly, then plowed, harrowed fine and leveled, and beds made or trenches opened for transplanting. If the amount of fertilizer is small, you can also first prepare the land and open trenches to apply the fertilizer in a concentrated way, mix the soil and fertilizer, and then plant the seedlings.
(3) Topdressing: Topdressing generally needs to be done 2~3 times. The first time is after the seedlings have recovered. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, open a shallow trench on one side of the plant and apply 1000 kg of high-quality organic fertilizer and 20~30 kg of three-element compound fertilizer, then water, and cultivate and firm the soil to control growth, so that the seedlings grow vigorously. The second topdressing is done at the full fruiting stage. Before picking the first pepper, open a trench and apply 20~30 kg of three-element compound fertilizer, then cultivate and build up ridges 10~15 cm high. In the late fruiting period, to delay plant growth and prevent premature aging, a third topdressing can be done along with watering, generally by applying 10 kg of urea per mu.
During the flowering and fruiting period of peppers, spraying 0.2%~0.3% urea or trisodium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, Yemianbao, rare earth micro-fertilizer, etc., can preserve flowers and promote fruit set, increase yield and improve quality.
