What kind of soil conditions does sweet cherry cultivation require?

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
Sweet cherries prefer deep, fertile, loose and well-aerated soil, with a soil pH between 6.5-7.5 and an organic matter content above 1%. They are not tolerant of waterlogging, so standing water in the soil must be drained promptly, otherwise it will cause the death of the sweet cherry tree. They are also very sensitive to land previously used for stone fruit crops; before planting, it is better to grow non-fruit-tree crops for two to three years, and then plant sweet cherries.

1. Temperature: Sweet cherries begin to bloom when the temperature rises above 15°C, and at 20-25°C the fruit develops and ripens over about 2 months. Sweet cherries have very weak resistance to frost, and if a late spring cold snap occurs in spring, they are very easily damaged by freezing.

2. Soil: Sweet cherries grow relatively well when planted in deep, loose sandy loam with good aeration. If planted in poorly drained, heavy and compacted soil, the tree will grow weakly.

3. Water: Sweet cherry roots require a relatively high oxygen concentration and are very sensitive to oxygen deficiency, and they are also very sensitive to soil moisture content. When soil moisture is too high, it easily leads to insufficient oxygen in the soil, affecting the normal respiration of the root system, and in severe cases causing root rot. In summer, when drought lowers soil moisture, if watering is insufficient, not only is new shoot growth inhibited, but the tree also declines prematurely and fruit quality is poor.

4. Light: Sweet cherries are a sun-loving type; in an environment with sufficient light, the tree grows robustly, the life span of fruiting branches is extended, the flower buds are plump and full, and the fruit-setting rate is high.

5. Wind: Wind also has a great impact on sweet cherry cultivation. Strong winds in severe winter easily cause branches to dry out and flower buds to freeze, so wind protection also requires special attention.

When planting sweet cherries, the first thing to consider is local transport and sales, local climate and other conditions in order to choose suitable varieties for planting.
