Chestnut planting density varies from region to region. Generally, plain chestnut orchards are suitable at 30-40 trees per mu, mountain chestnut orchards at 40-60 trees per mu, and planned dense-planting chestnut orchards can be planted at 60-111 trees per mu. Chestnut planting density varies from region to region. Generally, plain chestnut orchards are suitable at 30-40 trees per mu, mountain chestnut orchards at 40-60 trees per mu, and planned dense-planting chestnut orchards can be planted at 60-111 trees per mu.

Nursery management of chestnut:

1. Maintain the temperature and humidity inside the plastic shed

When the temperature inside the shed rises to 30°C, immediately uncover the plastic film on both sides of the shed at the same time to ventilate and cool it down, and keep the relative humidity inside the shed above 90%. When the humidity cannot reach this level, spray water once every 3-5 days, and it is best to keep it in a mist-like state at all times.

2. Hardening off seedlings

Hardening off seedlings is a main measure to promote the development of grafted seedlings and improve seedling quality. After grafting, the seedling stock heals in 10-15 days, and in 20 days it can produce 2-3 leaves. By the end of April, when the daily average temperature has reached above 15°C, hardening off should be carried out. At 1 p.m. on a sunny day, uncover all the film, then cover it again before sunset, gradually increasing the time of sunlight exposure to the young seedlings. After 5-7 days of hardening off, the plastic film can be removed.

3. Remove sprouts

In order to accelerate the healing of the graft union and improve the survival rate, adventitious buds on the rootstock should be removed in time. Do not rush to cultivate seedling-origin sprouts, as this will affect the healing, sprouting, and growth of the grafted seedlings. Even if the scion has not survived, only one sprout should be retained to promote the growth of the grafted seedling.

4. Strengthen water and fertilizer management

After the young seedlings are uncovered from the shed, loosen the soil and weed frequently, and water in time. From June to July, apply fertilizer once every 10-15 days, and apply fertilizer 3-4 times during the whole growing period. Be sure to apply fertilizer in furrows or spray at low concentration, applying 4-5 kg of urea per mu, and water immediately after application. Never affect the growth of the seedling stock. At the same time, pay attention to drainage during the flood season.

Reasonable dense planting is one of the basic measures to increase chestnut tree yield, so everyone should determine the planting density of the chestnut orchard according to the actual local conditions.
