What Fertilizer Is Best for Sweet Cherries in Spring? A Full Breakdown of Fertilization Key Points
Sweet cherries need different fertilizers at different growth stages, so what fertilizer should be applied to sweet cherries in spring?
What Fertilizer to Apply to Sweet Cherries in Spring
In early spring, the main task is topdressing sweet cherries, which is divided into two stages.
1. The first stage is pre-bloom fertilizer for cherries. The fertilizers here are mainly organic fertilizers, with an emphasis on nitrogen fertilizer. According to the planting scale of the cherry trees, we can prepare a measured amount of well-rotted and fermented pig, cattle and sheep manure, add urea, and apply it deeply in trenches around the plants. Pre-bloom fertilizer is meant to promptly replenish the tree's nutrients and promote flower bud sprouting and spring shoot growth.
2. The second stage is post-bloom fertilizer for cherries. Post-bloom fertilizer is also called fruit-promoting fertilizer. Here we need to supplement the fruit trees with nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and boron fertilizers. Phosphorus, potassium and boron fertilizers can be applied deeply, with ordinary compound fertilizer plus boron fertilizer for each tree. Using potassium sulfate-based balanced compound fertilizer works relatively well, and the young shoots do not grow excessively. When carrying out foliar topdressing, you can spray amino acid boron zinc calcium, or combine potassium dihydrogen phosphate (0.2%), boron fertilizer (0.1%) and brassinolide (50-100 mg/L) for spray fertilization. Post-bloom fertilizer is mainly to promote fruit development, improve quality, and supplement the fruit tree's nutrition.
In short, sweet cherries need two topdressings in spring to ensure a timely supply of nutrients and promote later fruit growth.
