Kiwifruit is a sweet-and-sour, delicious fruit, rich in a variety of nutrients; it can fight scurvy, and also stabilize mood, lower cholesterol, aid digestion, prevent constipation, and more. Below, we introduce the cultivation and planting techniques for kiwifruit.

1. Orchard site selection

Kiwifruit is a light-loving fruit tree; its roots fear waterlogging and also fear high temperatures and drought, while new shoots fear strong winds and also fear late-spring cold snaps and low-temperature freeze damage. It is suitable to establish an orchard on sunny south-facing, southeast-facing and southwest-facing slopes. The soil should preferably be a sandy soil with deep, fertile soil layers and good permeability, and the soil should be slightly acidic.

2. Planting of seedlings

Select seedlings that are free of disease and pests, grow vigorously, and have a well-developed, intact root system. Plant them from October to the end of February of the following year. When planting, separate the roots and spread them evenly over the mound of soil; after the roots are placed, fill in firmly with fine soil.

3. Fertilizing and watering

Before planting the seedlings, apply base fertilizer in the planting pits; for young trees, use the method of small amounts applied frequently, and thereafter fertilize 3 times each year, 1 time with base fertilizer and 2 times with top dressing, mainly with quick-acting fertilizer, with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium at 4:2:1. During the growing period the water requirement is large; in the three months of June, July and August the soil moisture content is required to be around 70%; if summer brings continuous rainfall, or if it rains just after watering, drain promptly to avoid drowning the plants.

4. Timely harvesting

Kiwifruit should preferably be harvested on a windless, sunny day; rainy days, the period after rain, and mornings when the dew has not yet dried are all unsuitable for harvesting. The best picking time is before 10 a.m., when the temperature has not yet risen.
