When do orange trees usually bloom?
Orange trees generally bloom in spring, that is, between February and March each year, and the flowering period lasts about one month. The tree is evergreen all year round, and its flowers are yellow-white with a delicate fragrance, making it a fine tree species for courtyard planting. So do you know how to plant an orange tree in a courtyard? Let's take a look below with the editor.
How do you plant an orange tree?
1. Planting time
The best time to plant oranges is from September to November each year (sprouting of spring shoots in February-March is also fine). Use a soil pit as the planting method; digging to a depth of 80 cm is best, and when backfilling soil, reaching 40 cm is enough.
2. Watering
Newly planted orange seedlings need to be watered to settle the roots. After that, keep watering regularly during dry periods, and ensure good drainage around the time of the Rain Water solar term. Generally, in summer when the weather is dry, water once in the morning and once in the evening; in spring and autumn, water once every 2-3 days; in winter, water once every 5-7 days. The amount of water each time should not be too large; just keep the soil moist.
3. Fertilizing
You can choose organic fertilizer and pollution-free manure fertilizer. According to the growth of the orange tree, apply fertilizer as needed during the seedling stage, the mature seedling stage, and when branches are sparse, mainly by applying fertilizer to the soil. Fertilizing can be done together with watering.
4. Pruning
Winter and summer are more suitable for pruning orange trees. The winter pruning time is from the fruit ripening and harvesting period to the spring budding period. Mature large trees can be pruned slightly earlier, while small trees are best pruned after temperatures rise in early spring. Summer pruning is pruning during the vigorous growth period, mainly thinning branches and pinching off growing tips.
5. Pest and disease control
After spring shoots mature and when summer and autumn shoot leaves turn green, orange trees are prone to citrus greening disease, and from early April to late October they are prone to canker disease, so everyone should take preventive measures in advance and spray the corresponding agents. In addition, common pests and diseases of orange trees include anthracnose, scab, rust mites, red spider mites, leafminers, and so on. Everyone should spray agents according to the situation.
Besides being planted in courtyards, orange trees can also be grown as indoor potted plants, so friends living in cities might as well grow a pot themselves.
