Passion fruit has a rich fragrance, and its pulp is nutritious and juicy, with a sweet-and-sour taste that many growers choose to cultivate. The first thing growers should pay attention to is the flowering period of passion fruit. How long is the flowering period of passion fruit?

1. The flowering period of passion fruit

Passion fruit is an autumn fruit. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from July to September. Passion fruit planted in spring of the same year can bloom in July and bear fruit in September. From the second year after planting, it begins to bloom in April each year, and can bloom 5-6 batches a year, with 20 days between each batch. From flowering to fruit maturity takes 60-70 days, and the fruit harvest lasts more than 4 months.

2. Why does passion fruit only bloom but not bear fruit?

1. If the flowering and fruiting period encounters high temperature and drought, and water cannot be guaranteed, the flower buds cannot develop normally, then turn yellow and fall off, and some fruits will become wrinkled or even shrivel and drop.

2. The possible reason is that after the flower buds appear, they suffer from the stress of low temperature, which prevents the flower buds from expanding, and the fertilizer applied is too concentrated, while the plant is still too small and its resistance to stress is not strong.

3. Passion fruit has poor natural pollination. Especially when grown on a rooftop or with fewer plants, there is a lack of pollinating insects to help, making effective pollination even more difficult.

3. How to pollinate passion fruit?

Generally, domestic passion fruit comes in two varieties, one purple variety and one yellow variety, distinguished by flower color. The purple variety of passion fruit can be pollinated by insects; otherwise, it cannot bear fruit. If it is the yellow variety of passion fruit, it is a bit more troublesome. Its stamens and pistils grow in a special way, with the stamens and pistils far apart, requiring cross-pollination, and insects can hardly guarantee the pollination rate, so manual cross-pollination is needed for it to bear fruit easily.

There are two methods of manual pollination: first, use a brush to evenly apply pollen to the three stigmas of the pistil. Second, use tweezers to collect the pollen sacs and place them in an average clean cup, then add water to dissolve the pollen in the water, and then use a sprayer to spray the pollen water onto the stigmas. Note that passion fruit blooms around 11 a.m. every day. Carry out manual pollination promptly after flowering, and complete the pollination work before 4 p.m.

Flowering and fruiting of passion fruit are very important. If it does not bloom or bear fruit, it often affects the harvest and causes loss of profit, so special attention should be paid to the flowering period and flowering conditions of passion fruit.
