What Tea Is Zhengyan Rougui? Understanding Wuyi Rock Tea in One Article
In rock tea circles, there are three kinds of tea that serve as the gateway, the basic style, and the essential introductory tea. One is called “Shuixian (Narcissus)”, another is called “Rougui (Cinnamon)”, and the third is called “Dahongpao (Big Red Robe)”. So today we will introduce what tea Zhengyan Rougui is.
Zhengyan Rougui belongs to the oolong tea category. More than one hundred years have passed since its discovery. It is a famous tea named after the tea tree of the Rougui (Cinnamon) variety; the finished tea has a tightly rolled appearance and is dark greenish-brown, with a pungent aroma and flavor in the brew. Rougui tea has excellent quality and stable characteristics. It is the flagship variety of Wuyi rock tea and has been widely introduced and planted in other regions.
In many national-level famous and premium tea competitions, it has been entered as a typical representative of rock tea and has always won gold awards. After the 1990s, Wuyi rock tea ranked among China's top ten famous teas, mainly relying on its extraordinary fragrance and distinctive character. It is exported to Hong Kong, China, Macao, China, Southeast Asia, Japan, the United Kingdom and other countries and regions.
The following two places serve as representatives:
Niulan Keng, which presents a V shape, with Rougui planted at the bottom of the ravine. Here the air is humid and the sunlight duration is relatively short. The Rougui grown in this environment has a delicate, subtle aroma and is mild and mellow.
Matou Yan (Kaishan Ping), where the terrain is flat and broad, and the sunlight duration is longer than at Niulan Keng. Unlike Niulan Keng, which lies within a ravine and is nourished by water vapor, the Rougui of Matou Yan Kaishan Ping has a bold, assertive aroma.
