Is the pineapple radish genetically modified? This article explains its true origins
The pineapple radish is not a genetically modified food; it belongs to non-GMO foods. The pineapple radish is an especially delicious fruit radish, also called Purple Beauty, and is a new variety bred by the Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
1. A case of pineapple radish cultivation
A new type of vegetable fruit————the pineapple radish, grown by a fellow villager surnamed Li in Yangxin County, Shandong Province. Because both its skin and flesh are purplish red, Old Li fondly calls it “Purple Beauty.” It is a fruit radish he carefully cultivated after introducing it.
Old Li, who lives in Pozhuang Village, Yangxin County, runs “Old Li Manor.” Ever since introducing the pineapple radish, he has poured all his body and mind into it. With rich cultivation experience plus scientific management, his pineapple radishes grow plump with moisture, crisp in texture, and moderate in sweetness.
To welcome the New Year, his home rushed to open its own pineapple radish field to the market during the New Year's Day period. Because pineapple radishes are relatively rare on the market, and production is limited, Old Li temporarily set the price at 15 yuan per jin. He also specially ordered a batch of packing boxes for the need of giving gifts during the Spring Festival New Year visits.
Because a standardized production process is implemented, Old Li's pineapple radishes grow uniform in size and excellent in appearance, which is also a source of pride for Old Li. He confidently introduced that his fruit radish flesh is rich in various trace elements needed by the human body, such as calcium, iron, zinc and selenium, and its VC content is more than 10 times that of apples.
Every 100 grams of Old Li's pineapple radish is rich in 260 mg of anthocyanins, and the radish leaves are verdant and green; they can be eaten cold-dressed, cooked in hot pot, or used as filling.
At present, there are not yet many growers cultivating pineapple radishes, so everyone can try growing them.
