China Fir Planting Techniques

1. Site selection

The geographical location for planting China fir is very important; the foot of hills, valleys and shady slopes are all relatively suitable. This is because China fir is a tree species that likes warmth and moisture and fears wind and drought; therefore, extra attention must be paid when planting.

2. Controlled burning and land clearing

This step cannot be neglected. In the autumn and winter of the year before planting China fir, firebreaks must be made and controlled burning of the felled vegetation carried out; then dig large holes 50×50 cm deep and wide according to a 1.5×1.5 m spacing, and let the soil be fully exposed to the sun and weather; after the spring rains, fill the soil back and plant.

3. Planting at the right time

Planting time is generally in February. When the buds of the China fir seedlings are about the size of soybeans and have not yet opened, plant them promptly on a rainy day; when planting, dig up the seedlings and cut off the irregular fibrous roots; then coat the roots with thin yellow mud slurry, plant them upright, cover with soil, lift the seedlings gently and then firm the soil.

4. Weeding and fertilizing

In the summer of the year the China fir seedlings survive, weeding, loosening the soil and fertilizing should be carried out 1-2 times; diluted manure water can be poured on them, and fertilizer should be applied once each in spring and summer every year; within 1-2 years, farmyard manure is preferable, and from the 3rd year onward, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium chemical fertilizers can be applied in appropriate amounts according to tree vigor and soil fertility; weeding should be carried out before each fertilization.
