A Detailed Guide to the Planting Methods and Timing of the Yew
The yew is a common tree in our country, combining ornamental value and greening in one, and is very popular among flower lovers, some of whom even keep a pot of it at home. To grow a yew well, you must master the planting methods and timing, so what are the planting methods and timing for yew?
1. What are the planting methods and timing for yew?
The yew can be planted by two methods: sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings. Seed sowing means selecting some healthy, plump, mature seeds, disinfecting them in potassium permanganate and washing them clean and drying them, then sowing them into the soil. If transplanting seedlings, you can buy some fine, healthy nursery stock and plant it into the soil at a certain spacing, and finally do the watering, fertilizing and mounding of soil well. When planting, it is generally best to plant in early winter and early spring.
1. Seed planting method:
(1) Seed preparation
Harvest after the seeds mature each year in November, wash the fleshy seed coat clean and dry it, then store it buried in moist sand in a dry, wind-sheltered place. Cover the top with plastic film. In summer and autumn, turn the seeds twice a month. By March of the following year, they can be sown and raised as seedlings.
(2) Preparation of the sowing soil
When sowing, choose a wind-sheltered, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil, with a gentle slope and a deep top layer. In August to September, clear the weeds and level it into horizontal terraces, digging 20-30 cm deep, and in November do a shallow plowing and fine harrowing. When preparing the potting soil, apply some decomposed base fertilizer.
(3) Specific sowing method
In early spring, take out the seeds that have been stored for a year, select the seeds that have cracked open and shown white, disinfect them in a potassium permanganate solution for 10 minutes, then rinse them clean with water, and after drying, sow them evenly in the potting soil. You can broadcast them directly. After sowing, cover with soil, just enough so the seeds cannot be seen. During the seedling stage, use something to shade them, then lay moss to protect the seedlings and keep the seedbed safe from wind and sun. Keep the soil loose and moist at all times.
2. Seedling planting method:
(1) Preparing the soil: Before planting, prepare the soil; the flower pot must have drainage holes, and the soil should also be loose and good. Only well-aerated potting soil is more conducive to the growth of the seedling.
(2) Choosing seedlings: You can buy seedlings at the local market, and try to choose thick, strong, disease-free young plants; if the seedling is too weak in growth, it will recover more slowly.
(3) Planting: The planting method is also very simple; first dig a planting hole in the potting soil, then put the seedling in, and then cover its roots well with soil.
2. What are the precautions for planting yew?
1. It is best to plant the yew before it sprouts in late winter and early spring; large seedlings need to be with a soil ball. In daily care and management, often loosen the soil, weed, fertilize and irrigate, and spread the dead branches and fallen leaves around the roots, to help maintain the acidity of the soil.
2. When watering a potted yew, be sure to pay attention to water quality. For watering potted plants, natural rainwater is best, followed by clean flowing river water and lake water. If well water must be used, be sure to pay attention to water quality; especially well water in northern regions is often too alkaline, which is not good for the growth of the yew. Next is the water temperature; the water temperature for watering potted flowers should be basically close to the air temperature.
3. When growing the yew, be sure to pay attention to pruning; only then will the yew that grows out look good.
In short, when planting the yew, you can choose a suitable method according to the actual situation; generally you can plant by two methods, seeds or seedlings, and it is best to do it in early winter and early spring.
