Phlox, also known as small sky-blue hydrangea, originated in Mexico. It is now cultivated in gardens throughout China and has extremely high ornamental value. So when is the flowering period of phlox? How is it best planted? Here is an introduction:

1. Phlox flowering period

Phlox blooms from May to October every year. Due to the influence of climatic conditions, it blooms a little earlier in some regions and a little later in others. Phlox can bloom twice a year, each time for about 40 days. The first full bloom period is April to May, and the second flowering period is August to September, extending to December when scattered small flowers continue to open.

2. How to plant phlox

1. Planting time

The time for sowing and planting varies with the season. Because the climate in the various regions of the south is hot and the seeds cannot withstand it, sowing is often done in autumn. In the various regions of the north, it can be chosen in early spring, that is, around February, and then it can bloom after May. The specific timing can be chosen according to the season.

2. Planting method

(1) Because the seeds are relatively small, they can be sown on a seedling tray. The substrate used can be clean vermiculite and river sand; larger clods of soil must not be used. Before use, it can be exposed to sunlight first, or treated with chemicals.

(2) To increase the germination rate, the seeds can be soaked in warm water for 6-8 hours, then removed and dried.

(3) After treatment, sow the seeds evenly, but pay attention to the spacing so as not to affect sprouting. Cover with 3 mm of fine soil.

(4) After completing this, water thoroughly, and cover with plastic film to retain moisture. Germination can be expected in about 7-10 days.

(5) After the seedlings grow out, do not rush to transplant them. Wait until the root system at the base of the plant has stabilized before transplanting them into pots.

In short, phlox likes warmth, is slightly tolerant of cold, and dislikes extreme heat. It is not drought-tolerant, dislikes waterlogging, and likes loose, well-drained sandy loam soil.
