When eating pitaya, there are many black seeds inside. Many people think they are inedible and pick them out, but in fact these seeds can be eaten and can also be grown into a small potted plant that looks very nice. So how do you grow a pitaya potted plant at home?

1. Choosing the pot and soil

Before planting, we should do the preparation work and first choose a suitable planting pot and growing medium. Pitaya is a shallow-rooted plant, and its root system is shallow, so choosing a clay pot or other flowerpot with a diameter of 25-50cm is enough, but the bottom of the pot must have small holes so it can drain water.

Pitaya does not have strict requirements for soil, but the soil needs to be loose, breathable, and well-draining. You can choose neutral or slightly acidic soil, and alkaline soil is not suitable. If we really do not know how to choose, we can go to a flower shop and buy prepared substrate soil.

2. Potting and management

For a pitaya potted plant, it is best to choose the cutting method, generally in spring, so that the climate and temperature are favorable for the plant to survive. Choose a plump stem segment from a disease-free branch, let it air-dry, then insert it into a flowerpot filled with substrate soil, keep the soil dry, do not water it within one week, and water it after one week. New roots can grow in about one month. If you have no source of cuttings, you can buy them online, which is cheap and affordable.

Pitaya has extremely strong drought tolerance, so there is no need to water too much; just keep the soil slightly moist. In the early growth stage, water once a week with dilute organic fertilizer water mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer. Remember that the fertilizer water should not be too concentrated. In summer, with high temperatures and strong light, remember to shade it properly.

3. Flowering period management

Pitaya has a very long flowering period, and the flowers are numerous and large, placing great demand on the plant's nutrients. So in addition to daily fertilizer and water irrigation, two weeks before flowering, you should also apply additional organic fertilizer water containing phosphorus and potassium, once a week. Potted pitaya is limited by pot soil and nutrients, so it is not suitable to keep too many side branches, and each branch should not have more than 3 flowers. When it fruits, it is best to remove the other two flowers and keep only one for fruiting.

4. Harvesting fruit and overwintering

In November each year, the fruit is basically all harvested. At this time, we apply base fertilizer once. The northern region is colder, so it needs to be moved indoors to protect against the cold. Around May, it can be moved outside again, and the branches that fruited the previous year should be cut off at the base. This is to promote branching and lay the foundation for flowering and fruiting this year; otherwise, branches that have already fruited will not flower and fruit again.

In short, pitaya is very easy to grow in a pot. As long as you prepare the flowerpot and soil and then sow the seeds into it, it will be fine. But if you want it to grow fruit, you need to do a good job with watering and fertilizing, pest and disease control, and so on.
