Generally, an artificially cultivated blueberry bush can flower and fruit in its second year, but the yield is relatively small, and it only enters the full production period in the fifth year. So how can you plant blueberry bushes to achieve high yields? Be sure to remember the following points.

High-yield blueberry cultivation techniques

1. Soil

Keep the soil pH between 3.9-5.0 and the organic matter content within the range of 5%-15%; if the pH is too high, it will cause iron deficiency and poor growth, and in severe cases it will lead to the death of the seedlings; when the pH value is greater than 5.5, use sulfur powder or aluminum sulfate. If you buy three-year-old and five-year-old blueberry seedlings, you need to control the pH value one year in advance.

2. Planting density

The planting density of blueberries depends on the variety planted. Generally, the planting density of highbush blueberry is 1.2-1.5 m between plants and 2.5-3.5 m between rows. The planting density of rabbiteye blueberry is 1.5-2.5 m between plants and 3.5-4.5 m between rows. The planting density of lowbush blueberry is 0.5-1 m x 1 m. In actual production, the planting density can be adjusted according to the specific variety planted, plant size, soil fertility and management level.

3. Planting time

Field blueberry seedlings are suitable for planting in spring and autumn. In northern regions, it is best to plant in spring; if planted in autumn and winter management is improper, they are prone to frost damage. Spring planting should be done before spring growth begins. In southern regions, they can be planted in autumn, generally in November to December when growth stops and they enter the dormant period.

4. Water and fertilizer management

For highbush blueberry, apply organic fertilizer twice by the furrow method. After the second year of planting, spray the leaves with chelated iron solution and borax solution. Blueberry irrigation requires attention to water source and water quality. Deep well water generally has a relatively high pH value and high sodium and calcium content. Long-term use will affect the growth and yield of blueberries. When irrigating, sulfuric acid can be used to adjust the pH value to about 4.5-5.5 before irrigation, but acid water should be applied about once every 3 irrigations.

In addition, timely weeding, pruning, and flower and fruit thinning are also effective means of increasing blueberry yield, so growers must pay attention.
