Polygonatum cirrhifolium is generally planted by seed sowing and underground rhizome planting. For seed sowing, select seeds that matured in August of the previous year and sow them in late March of the following year; rhizome planting is done in late autumn or around late March in early spring. During the planting period, there are also the following points to note:

1. Pest and disease control

Black spot is the main disease of Polygonatum cirrhifolium, damaging the leaves. In the early stage of the disease, irregular yellow-brown spots appear on the leaves starting from the leaf tip, and afterward the spots spread downward, becoming more severe in the rainy season. The affected leaves turn yellow and withered. In the rainy season, drainage must be carried out in time to avoid waterlogging affecting the plants and causing disease. Before the disease occurs and in its early stage, you can also spray 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture or 50% Tuzet 1000-fold solution, once every 7-10 days, for several consecutive times.

2. Fertilization

Topdressing is carried out together with weeding and intertillage. The first fertilization is done after the first weeding, and afterward fertilize once every 1-2 months. Each time apply 1000-1500 kg per mu of high-quality human and livestock manure. Before winter each year, apply another 1200—1500 kg per mu of high-quality farmyard manure, mixed with 50 kg of superphosphate and 50 kg of cake fertilizer. After mixing evenly, apply in furrows, then water to accelerate root formation and growth. However, when fertilizing, pay attention to the amount and concentration to avoid burning the roots.

3. Removing flowers

Polygonatum cirrhifolium has a relatively long flowering and fruiting period, and each stem node axil bears many umbels and fruits, consuming a large amount of nutrients and affecting rhizome growth. For this reason, the flower buds should be removed in time before the buds form. This promotes the concentrated transfer of nutrients to the harvested rhizome part, thereby increasing the yield.

Polygonatum cirrhifolium is generally harvested in spring and autumn, with the best quality from autumn harvesting. Therefore, after 3-4 years of cultivation, Polygonatum cirrhifolium can be harvested and processed in autumn.
