Chinese trumpet vine (Campsis grandiflora), also known as ziling, five-claw dragon, red flower water-pouring lotus, hanging golden bell, tree-climbing dragon, abortion flower, and vine flower, is a climbing vine and one of the most famous garden flowers. So when is its blooming season? How do you grow it?

When is the blooming season of the Chinese trumpet vine?

The blooming season of the Chinese trumpet vine is from May to August. When the flowers open, the inner surface of the corolla is bright red and the outer surface is orange-yellow, which is truly beautiful.

How do you grow the Chinese trumpet vine?

1. Potting soil

The Chinese trumpet vine requires good permeability in its potting soil and must be planted in a deep, large pot. You can use soil from a vegetable garden (or flower garden) with base fertilizer added for planting, or you can directly buy potting mix from a flower market.

2. Planting

The Chinese trumpet vine can be propagated by cuttings, layering, and division. Cuttings can be taken in spring and summer, selecting thicker one-year-old branches. Cut them into 10-15 cm long cuttings, remove the leaves, and then insert them into the cutting bed at a row spacing of 15-20 cm and a plant spacing of 5 cm, inserting 2/3 of the cutting into the soil, pressing firmly and watering.

3. Daily care

Watering: During the growing period of the Chinese trumpet vine, it needs frequent watering. Watering should be moderate, keeping the pot slightly moist but not waterlogged as much as possible, and during dormancy keep the soil in the pot on the dry side, slightly moist.

Fertilizing: The Chinese trumpet vine likes fertilizer and moisture, so after sprouting in spring, water and fertilizer management should be strengthened. Generally, apply liquid fertilizer 1-2 times a month. In winter, when the Chinese trumpet vine enters its dormant period and hibernates, no fertilizing is needed.

Building a trellis and pruning: For those planted with a trellis, in order to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering, you can cut off weak, winter-killed, and crowded branches before sprouting in early spring, so as to improve ventilation and light penetration, which is beneficial for growth and flowering.

Although pests and diseases of the Chinese trumpet vine are relatively rare, you should still prevent and control aphids in spring and autumn, and you can spray pesticides in advance.
