A Detailed Guide to Honeysuckle Planting Methods and Precautions
Honeysuckle is a common flower in China. It can not only be brewed as tea but also used as a medicinal herb, so many people grow it. So what are the planting methods and precautions for honeysuckle?
1. What are the planting methods for honeysuckle?
1. Growing from seed
(1) Time: If possible, try to choose April, as the climate at this time is somewhat helpful for its growth and sprouting, and the survival rate will be relatively higher.
(2) Seed preparation: Buy good-quality seeds from the market. If there are relatively shriveled seeds, they should be picked out and not used for planting. Place the plump seeds in warm water at 40 degrees and soak them for about one day, then take them out once the seeds have cracked.
(3) Planting: After the seeds have been sprouted, simply plant them in the soil. After sowing, cover them with a 1cm layer of soil and spray water appropriately every day. It takes 7-10 days for small seedlings to grow.
2. Growing from cuttings
(1) Time: Try to choose the rainy season for this method, but do not choose winter, as doing it at that time is unfavorable for the cuttings to take root.
(2) Cutting: Cut a section of stem in good growing condition, with the length controlled at about 30-35cm. Use scissors or simply remove the leaves at the lower end.
(3) Planting the cutting: After the cutting is prepared, insert it into the soil, leaving only about 7-10cm above the ground, and finally press the soil firm.
2. What precautions are there for growing honeysuckle?
1. Light: In spring and autumn, conditions are generally fairly normal, and there is no need to worry too much about light. But when summer comes and the sun is very strong, we need to trim the honeysuckle in the planting area or set up structures that can provide shade. Next, in winter, appropriate insulation management can be carried out. Basically, just maintain at least six to eight hours of light per day.
2. Water and fertilizer: Fertilize in spring and autumn each year, and reasonably use organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer according to the living habits of honeysuckle. Arrange watering reasonably according to the growth conditions of honeysuckle at different stages. It is best to water after each fertilization, as this can dilute the fertilizer concentration and make it less likely to damage the roots. Finally, water according to changes in climate and temperature, so as to maintain the normal growth of honeysuckle.
3. Temperature: The optimal temperature suitable for honeysuckle growth is around eighteen to twenty-eight degrees, but the temperature differences across the four seasons in China are relatively large, so in order to make honeysuckle grow better, field temperature management should be strengthened in daily management. Usually, the effect of lowering field temperature can be achieved by watering and building shade structures, and at the same time, the effect of keeping warm can be achieved by wrapping with plastic or building greenhouses.
4. Pruning: Carry this out every year after honeysuckle is harvested. Generally, the side branches of the honeysuckle are basically removed, then an appropriate amount of main branches is retained, and they are allowed to form a horizontal growth tendency. In this way, when spring comes the following year, new branches and leaves will grow from the pruned areas. This can increase the yield of honeysuckle and also reduce pests and diseases.
Overall, honeysuckle is very easy to grow. You can choose to sow seeds after soaking them, or cut a section of stem for planting. Once planted well, you just need to do a good job with light, water and fertilizer, pruning, and other tasks.
