“The King of Fruits” durian is a fruit of great economic value. Its flesh is made up of aril-covered seed packets, pale yellow in color, with a “distinctive” odor. But do you know where it grows? What varieties are there?

Where does durian grow?

Durian generally grows in tropical regions with high temperatures year-round, such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia; it also grows in Florida, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other regions of South America.

What varieties of durian are there?

1. Red Durian

Native to Borneo, its shell is red and covered in long spines, at first glance looking like a giant rambutan.

2. Monthong

Monthong is a very popular variety, with lots of flesh and sweet, golden-yellow flesh. It often has one larger section called the “main flesh.” Because its odor is not too strong, it is very suitable for first-timers to “get started” eating this fruit that is both stinky and fragrant. Monthong can be eaten all year round, but the price varies with the season; in peak season the price is lowest, and it is also at its most delicious.

3. Turtle Durian

Turtle durian grows in the jungles of Borneo. Its characteristic is that many fruits grow clustered together at the base of the tree trunk.

4. Durio oxleyanus

Durio oxleyanus is a small durian covered all over in green spines. It is small in size and looks like a green sea urchin; its weight rarely exceeds 500g and never exceeds 1 kilogram. Its flesh is milky white or grayish yellow, and it has almost none of the characteristic odor of durian.

Now is just the start of durian season, so friends who love eating it should not miss out.
