Male rice plants, that is, what we call bakanae disease, are a common disease in rice cultivation. How are they formed, and how should they be prevented and controlled?

1. How male rice plants are formed

Male rice plants are the common name for bakanae disease. The causes of formation include: seeds carrying bacteria, irregular seed soaking, using the same seed soaking agent for consecutive years causing rice to develop resistance, improper cultivation management, and so on.

2. Methods for preventing and controlling male rice plants

1. The seeds selected for seed production must be disease-free, and disease-free seed production fields should be established.

2. Seed soaking with chemicals must be standardized. Use a dedicated pool for the seed soaking chemical, and get the concentration right. You can use 100 grams of 50% carbendazim added to 50 kg of water for seed soaking; or 120 grams of 35% bakanae spirit, added to 50 kg of water for seed soaking. When soaking in the chemical solution, it must be noted that the liquid level must be 15-20 cm above the seed layer, for the seeds to absorb. At the same time, during the seed soaking process, the liquid surface should remain still; it must not be stirred midway, nor reused, to ensure the bacteria are suffocated.

3. Do not use the same seed soaking chemical every year; rotate their use.

4. Sprouting should not be too long, and when pulling seedlings, root damage should be avoided as much as possible, and cultivation management should be strengthened.

5. When diseased plants are found, pull them out and dispose of them promptly to avoid harming other healthy plants.

The appearance of male rice plants will lead to reduced crop yields. To prevent and control them, you must make good choices when reserving seeds, and seed treatment must be strict.
